Can I be billed? Do you ship C.O.D.?

Product Information

Must medical-grade power cords have clear plugs?
The UL and CSA standards do not mandate clear plugs nor are there any restrictions on color.  Many hospitals prefer clear plugs so that internal connections can be inspected visually, quickly and easily.

What is a medical-grade power cord?
The plug determines whether a power cord can be classified as a medical or hospital-grade cord.  Cords used with medical equipment in North America must be hospital-grade and conform to the special requirements contained in the following standards:  Medical equipment standards, UL 2601-1 and CAN/CSA C22.2 no 60601-1; Power supply cord standards, UL 817 and CAN/CSA C22.2 no 21; Attachment plug standards, UL 498 and CAN/CSA C22.2 no 42.
The hospital grade plug conforms to the NEMA 5-15 standard, where the blades are solid brass with nickel plating and the plug includes a cable retention device or strain relief.

Is there a maximum length for medical-grade power cords?
There are no specific maximum lengths for cords noted in the applicable UL or CSA standards but the equipment must pass the leakage current test requirements in UL 2601-1 and CAN/CSA C22.2 no 60601-1. Cord length has an effect on leakage current within a system.

How do you recognize a medical-grade power cord?
North American medical-grade power cords have a "green dot" signifying that they have been designed and tested for grounding reliability, assembly integrity, strength and durability. They are approved by UL and CSA to UL 817 and CAN/CSA C22.2 no 21. The plug must be marked "Hospital Grade" and include a permanent green dot sized 4.8 to 6.4mm in diameter.

Do you charge sales tax?
Alpha Source charges applicable sales tax on orders billed to addresses within Wisconsin; otherwise we do not charge sales tax.

Fiber Optic Cable - Quick Tips

Medical Fiber Optic Cable Quick Tips

Quick TipsGreen Medical Fiber Optic Cable

  • Avoid stretching your fiber optic cable, forming configurations involving sharp angles or kinks, or contact with sharp objects
  • Keep the optical faces from contacting the floor. The resulting scratches will diminish the light output.
  • Any inadvertent cut or puncture will render the fiber optic cable unsafe. It should be taken out of service immediately.

Fiber Optic Cable - Visual Inspection

How to Perform a Fiber Optic Cable Visual Inspection For Network Data Cables Only

To make sure the fibers are not broken use a visible light "fiber optic tracer" or "pocket visual fault locater" to trace a path from fiber end to end.

For Endoscopic Systems

A light measurement device know as an integrating sphere will provide the most accurate results. It measures light output from the light source, the fiber optic light cables and endoscopes. Radiometers and Photometers can also be used to measure luminous radiation.

Note: Use extreme caution when inspecting medical and industrial fiber optic cables.

Fiber Optic Cables - Cleaning Tips

Fresh & Clean Medical Fiber Optic Cables Go A Long Way

Medical Fiber Optic CableMedical Fiber Optic CableMedical Fiber Optic CableMedical Fiber Optic Cable

Should the medical fiber optic cable become contaminated before use, clean the cable thoroughly with a soft bristled brush and hand warm water.

Recommended soap solutions: Use a non-oily cleaner or mild soap. Do not use synthetic detergents or oil based soaps as these soaps may be absorbed and may subsequently leak out to cause a tissue reaction.

Medical Fiber Optic Cable Cleaning

      1.      A soft bristled brush used in lukewarm water with mild soap is recommended to remove visible debris.
      2.      Do not use synthetic detergents or oil based soap, as the chemicals may be absorbed into the cable and
subsequently leak out and cause tissue reactions.
      3.      Rinse thoroughly in warm water followed by a distilled water rinse.

Disinfection of Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber optic cables may be soaked in disinfecting solutions without damage. Usually less than 10 minutes.

Sterilization of Fiber Optic Cables

Medical fiber optic cables are designed to withstand repeated autoclave sterilizations in the following types of sterilizers: standard gravity (Steam) and Steris (System 1). Avoid sterilizing with sharp or pointed instruments!

Following sterilization allow your cable to cool to room temperatures SLOWLY. Do NOT immerse or rinse in cold liquid, as this will cause fiber breakage and extensive light transmitting losses.

Fiber Optic Cables - Autoclaving Guidelines

1.   Standard Gravity Sterilizer: Wrap fiber optic cable in a surgical towel and place in a clean open tray. Sterilize for 30 minutes 250 F at (15 psi.) or 121 C at 1 kg/Cm2.

2.   High Speed Instrument (flash) Sterilizer: Wrap fiber optic cable in a surgical towel and place in a clean open tray. Sterilize for 3 minutes 270 F at (15 psi.) or 132 C at 2kg/Cm2.

* Pressure differential during steam autoclaving may cause small bubbles in the silicone tubing. The bubbles will not affect the fiber optic cable and will dissipate with time.
